What is Carbon 60?

This is an extraordinary molecule made from carbon atoms.
The surface is made from hexagons and pentagons and is an example of a semiregular solid called a truncated icosahedron.

Information on Uniform Polyhedra can be found at ETH Zürich: Department of Computer Science, where there is also a list plus thumbnail pictures of all the Uniform Polyhedra.

Carbon 60 was discovered through research at the University of Sussex, by Harold Kroto

Taken from the Sussex Fullerene Gallery

It clearly resembles a football!
